Dinamo to play hard against Cruz Azul

Bad Blue Boys stocking up on alcohol bottles and washing detergent

With the match against league leaders Cruz Azul looming, Dinamo Zagreb manager Jatex Cole declared a stage of emergency. "I think it's time to panic." he was quoted as saying, "Feyenoord beat us by 4 goals in the first match, then Cruz Azul wiped the turf of them, and now we meet Cruz Azul. What does that mean? 10-0?"

The frustrated manager is tipped to call upon the hard men in his squad to beef up the defence in this crunch match. If reports from the training ground are to be believed, the Croatian team are practising a 6 man defence, similar to the one that held Parma to a goaless draw at the end of last season and effectively shackled their top scorer Olivier Jean. "Drastic times call for drastic measures," said an unusually grim Cole.

Meanwhile, the Dinamo Zagreb fan club has sent out a message to the hardcore fans demanding that everyone move to Mexico in an attempt to flood the stadium. "We will paint the Estadio Azul red with their blood," fanclub spokesman Davor Milicic said simply. It has been reported that some fans have been seen buying alcohol and washing detergent in bulk, items that are the principal ingredients for a good Molotov cocktail, but then again they could simply be preparing for a stag night out washing clothes.

Dinamo Zagreb 3 - 1 Ajax Amsterdam AFC

Home side register convincing win in first friendly

Maksimir, Croatia
Pre-season Friendly - Both sides fielded their strongest teams for the first game of the season in an attempt by the managers to find out how their players were responding to pre-season training after the recently completed World Cup. Managers Jatex Cole and Jonathan Davies had agreed before the game to field their respective A-teams and the capacity crowd were not disappointed.

Zagreb was playing in a standard 4-4-2 formation with the recalled Josko Kurtovic playing wide on the left and captain Ivo Rados shifted to the right in an attempt to balance the side. Pedrag Vukicevic too, made his debut for the home side at centreback. Ivan Silberbauer was elected to partner Juan Manuel Gutiérrez de Cos in attack. Ajax was fielding an adventurous 3-4-3 formation, with captain Jason Otter between the sticks. Twin wingers Alex Bernaus and Michel Laisina were flanking the attacking midfield pair of Kaká and Marjan Obrovnik in the middle of the park.

The game started at a high tempo and within 6 minutes, a smart flick by Silberbauer had sent Luis González racing clear and the Argentinian made no mistake from ten feet, finshing with aplomb. The game began to settle down then, as both teams found a rythm. Vukisevic was looking a fine player in defence, effeciently mopping things up and cruising upfield at times.

In the 21st minute, there seemed little danger as Gutiérrez de Cos tracked back and won the ball back from Kaká, who had just started a decent attacking move. As the Zagreb striker turned on his heel to head back up the pitch, Obrovnik slipped on the wet grass. This allowed the Zagreb number 9 to leapfrog over his prone body and continue on his run. It was a magnificent solo salom as the Ajax defence failed to get anywhere near him. On the edge of the box, the Spanish marksmen let fly with a stupendous left foot shot that curled into the top right hand corner of the net. Otter took one step towards the shot then stopped, knowing instantly that he was beaten. There was nothing he could have done to stop the shot. Incredible. It wasn't even spoilt when Are Tronseth received a yellow card for taunting the opposition fans.

5 minutes before the break, the Dutch side managed to pull a goal back when Zavadil found space down the middle and slipped a neat through-ball that split the Zagreb defence and found a lurking Laisina. The Dutch winger shot and the ball came off Gareth Barry's backside and deflected into goal, wrongfooting keeper Marcel Need. It would be about the only time the Croatian defence was successfully breached for the afternoon.

There was a minor melee right before the break when Marco Parnela was tripped by an innocuous challenge by Iñaki. Players from both sides jumped in as Ajax's Mamuka Todua appeared to grab Iñaki by the throat. Otter ran the length of the field to join in the fray, wading in and appearing to spit in González's face. The referee flashed yellow cards in succession to the two Ajax players.

After the break, Zagreb seemed content to sit back and defend their lead. The weather was sweltering hot and the players were getting a little sluggish. Laisina was showing flashes of his talent, but the other players in his side were clearly not up to it.

Things seemed to be getting pretty quiet when out of the blue, Kurtovic got free of his marker Bernaus on the left and dribbled up the pitch. Bernaus made one last ditch recovering tackle, but his sliding challenge fell short. Kurtovic turned Frédéric Macrez inside out before he reached the touchline and sent a looping cross across the six yard box, past the outstretched arms of Otter and allowing Silberbauer to bang home from point-blank range. Marker Josué Mayard was nowhere in sight as Davies visibly seethed from the touchline.

With 24 minutes still to play, Todua effectively ended the contest when he received his second yellow and a consequent sending off for a studs-first challenge that left Iñaki writhing on the pitch. The bad blood between the players had obviously not lessened. The rest of the match passed without much incident, thereafter which the players signed autographs for the fans.

Wantaway Correira Considers Buying Out Contract

Reserve goalkeeper sets up hot dog stand in bid to raise funds

Zagreb's reserve goalkeeper Pablo Correira, tired of waiting for a club to pick him up, has decided to take things into his own hands and buy his contract out. Correira has set up a hot dog stand outside Maksimir stadium, selling various varieties of hotdogs including leftover frankfurters and bratwurst from the recent World Cup in Germany.

"The boss, he tell me it's not he don't wanna let me go, but no club gonna buy me. I say, then let me go, but he say my contract is still valid. What can I do? I want to play football you know, kick the ball around, let in a few goals, I mean, save a few goals of course," he explained when our reporter caught up with him.

Correira was snapped up on a free transfer in 2005 and has yet to feature in the senior squad. He had long given up on breaking into the first team, but never expected to stay for so long. "In Chile, they say me big prospect, you know?" he commented, jabbing a finger into this reporter's chest, "but no one give me chance to prove myself."

The Chilean goalkeeper refused to divulge how much he was hoping to make from this venture but was cautiously optimistic that he would in time, earn enough to buy his out his own contract with Zagreb. Joining him in this venture is fellow custodian and teamate Branislav Danilovic, although the latter was quick to point out that he was in this purely for commercial gain and not in defiance against the manager.

It remains to be seen whether Correira will be staying in Croatia for much longer, but all signs point to the fact that he'd be better off sticking to selling hotdogs for a career.

Looking Towards A New Season

By The Outsider

So what if we were barely hanging in there last season? So what if we only scraped through thanks to theat last win against Brondby? So what if our abysmal away form almost condemned us to eternal division 3 hell? So what if our goal difference was a big fat 0 (26-26)?

We'll come back stronger than ever, you'll see. The manager's got brains. We ain't never had a really good squad, but we make do with what we have and get on with the job. So what if we're over reliant on our captain? That's what he's for, isn't he? Rados will lead us into Division 1 one day, and it'll be closer than you think. So stay tuned.

Vukisevic signs for Zagreb

Serbian defender agrees personal terms

Chelsea defender Predrag Vukisevic completed his switch to Dinamo Zagreb yesterday evening after agreeing to a 2 year contract with the club. Vukisevic has 46 international caps with Serbia and Montenegro, together with 3 goals, making him a highly established player on the world stage. The 6ft nothing defender played an integral part in Chelsea's winning campaign this season, appearing 20 times for the London giants.

Manager Jatex Cole was pleased with the transfer, claiming that Vukisevic would bring much-welcomed experienced to Zagreb and help the club in what was going to be another difficult season. Some reporters were not as impressed though, pointing out that the defender was far from sprightly at the age of 29 and there was a risk that he could deprove. However, Cole was circumspect about the deal, saying that there had been a security clause written in and that the club would not stand to lose anything. The deal was reported to be Vukisevic and 3 million pounds in exchange for up-and-coming defensive prospect Ibrahim Abdel Rasheed.

In other news, reports have it that Zagreb is in the chase for highly rated Brann forward Michael Keise. The manager however, refused to confirm the speculation.

Zagreb welcome new signing Quedrue

Cole finally lands target after prolonged negotiations

The Bad Blue Boys landed yet another top class defender right before today's match with the aquisition of 60K rated Frenchman Franck Quedrue. The Boro man had long been a source of transfer speculation after the manager had announced he was surplus to requirements and put him on the transfer list. Zagreb manager Jatex Cole had long been among Quedrue's admirers but a hefty $40m price tag had scared a few clubs away.

However, after a few hours at the table, Zagreb announced that they had come to a deal with the English club. Quedrue cost the Croatian club $20m, with unsettled Brazilian midfielder Elano also going over to Middlesbrough as part of the deal. Quedrue stated that he was delighted to join a club like Zagreb, which was obviously of a higher calibre than Boro, and also said that the lure of 2nd Division football had swayed his resolve to stay in England.

A beaming Cole pointed out Quedrue's excellent defensive qualities and also hinted that the latter could play a part in the match against a rejuvinated Istanbulspor. Nevertheless, that remains to be seen as the match kicks off in about half an hour's time.

Ecstatic Cole Announces Barry Arrival

Aston Villa defender top class signing: manager

Dinamo Zagreb manager Jatex Cole unveiled his first major signing of the season today afternoon when former Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry was shown around Maksimir. Barry has been one of Villa's most consistent performers in the past few seasons, and the move is seen as a coup of sorts for Cole.

It was reported that the club's representatives had been in talks with Villa till the wee hours of the morning before a deal was finally struck. Barry claimed that he was 'pleased to be in Croatia, the weather's nice, the food's great and the scenery is better than I expected.' The assembled journalists laughed at what was obviously an attempt at a joke as a jet-lagged Barry grinned bemusedly at the sudden downpour outside the grounds of the stadium. The 28 year old Englishman is set to slot straight into a defence that conceded but a measly 7 goals the whole of last season and fans are optimistic that survival is more than a possibility if the manager continues in the right path.

As part of the deal, Australian midfielder Tim Cahill and Polish international defender Marek Kotas were signed by Villa as new manager Jay Duthie looked to youth as an answer to keeping his team in Division 3.

Cole claimed that a few more signings were still possible, and talks were ongoing with certain clubs. "We'll let you know when we've got out man," were his parting words.

A New Adventure

By The Editor

After an emphatic title win last season, Dinamo Zagreb look to be rebuilding the team in preperation for a tough season ahead in Division 2C. While many fans are still basking in the afterglow of the previous season's success, the manager and players are taking nothing for granted.

A 17 point margin seperated Zagreb and runners-up PSG last season as the Blues finished the season convincingly with an unbeaten record of 18 wins, and 4 draws, aided by 38 goals against 7 let in.

The Title... Finally

Zagreb records 10 straight wins to grab promotion

By The Outsider

The stuff of dreams eh? Dinamo Zagreb finally making it to Division 2 for the first time in a long while after so many near-misses and heartbreaks. And the players are justifiably proud of their achievement this season. Zagreb is still unbeaten so far and it will not be surprising if the 'invincibles' finish the season unbeaten.

A resounding 2-0 victory over K.A.A Gent yesterday confirmed what many critics had predicted at the halfway point of the season,. that the Blues were not going to let this opportunity slip away from them again. Striker Lee was in red-hot form once again, creating both goals in the match in front of an adoring crowd of travelling supporters. The striker left critics gasping for breath after his brilliant hat-trick saw off Monaco A.S in the previous game but Sasha Sabick in goal grabbed the plaudits this time with a fine showing, tipping over Golan Elul's firm drive and making numerous other good blocks to keep a clean sheet.

It remains to be seen whether Zagreb can maintain their unbeaten record, but on current form and with the players in high spirits after their triumph, Paris Saint- Germain, C.S.K.A Moscow and C.S Maritimo should be brushed aside easily.

Zagreb sign Norwegian striker Asbjørnsen

Good stuff, manager declares

Zagreb manager Jatex Cole announced that the club had signed long time target Trond Erik Asbjørnsen from Brann yesterday. The 26 year old striker was immediately loaned back to Brann, thereby "saving us from buying a plane ticket" according to a grinning Cole as he reveled in his coup.

As part of the trade, Joonas Siikala's loan move to Brann was made permanent while Chinese midfielder Huo Zhiyu and veteran South African international Elrio van Heerden also switched clubs. An undisclosed fee was also paid to Zagreb to complete the deal.

The move casts further doubt on star striker Ruslan Kostishin's future at the Croatian club. The Ukranian international has been dropped from the starting lineup for the past few matches after being one of the indispensible first-team players previously. With fellow striker Lee Song in good form, it is unlikely that Kostishin will manage to break into the first team again. Where he goes at the end of the season remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, defender Roy Keane looks to be on his way out of the club. The Irish centre-back has 4 international caps and has reportedly held contract talks with fc Skonto Riga. He is believed to be available for a price in the region of £30m. Skonto Riga, however, is thought to have tabled a significantly lower bid.

Captain Marvel saves the day (again)

fk Vardar 0 - 1 Dinamo Zagreb
By The Outsider

What would Zagreb do without Ivo Rados? The homegrown star forward once again served notice of his immense potential with his second goal in as many games, made all the more precious by the fact that it came deep in injury time.

In what many termed to be one of the last deciding matches of the season, Zagreb were stretched by their opponents in a gritty match. The home side were determined not to go down easily, as evidenced by the total of 4 yellow cards dished out to the team. Zagreb were not having it too easy either, with midfielders Iñaki and Luis González not really able to control the game. Olexandr Buryi was much improved after a lacklustre performance in the previous game but it was again Rados who was playing the midfield like a chess grandmaster.

Gogo Jocev in goal for Vardar was being tested by some stinging shots from the Zagreb strikers Lee Song and Juan Manuel Gutiérrez de Cos, and was equal to the task after Arne Repvik executed a splendid overhead kick from the visitors' lone corner. However, the home defence was holding strong, howled on by their brilliant home support.

As the game seemed destined for a goaless stalemate at the City Stadium, Iñaki swung a probing cross into the Vardar box and out popped Rados to head the ball strongly past Jocev to the glee of the small band of travelling supporters.

It's not even Christmas

Dinamo Zagreb 1 - 0 Malmö FF
By The Outsider

Back from a few day's break (oh lucky me), The Outsider was at Maksimir for the titanic clash between league leaders and pretenders.

And oh what a match it was. Simply breathtaking. The strokes were cutting on the home side, with every through-pass seeming to find it's mark, every shot magnetically attracted to the opposition goal, players seeming to move into space almost at will. I tell all you unlucky sods who failed to get tickets, I was gasping for breath within the first ten minutes.

Ivo Rados seemed to be untouchable whenever he got the ball, with some kind of force field around him. The opposition tried their best mind you, Manuel Fernandes was literally hanging off him as he attempted to shackle the kid, such that the referee had to have some words with him before half-time. And kid he is, Rados is but 24, not even in the prime of his career yet. I shudder to think how much damage he can do in the future,

But I'm digressing. Back to the match. Malmö manager Jason Tan had promised to gamble on his lineup days before the match, but the team list was disappointingly conservative. With a cautious 4-4-2 formation, quite unlike in previous games, it looked like the visitors were already hunkering down in their trenches and saying their last prayers before the opening whistle.

Kickoff was at 12:00 Central European Time, and Zagreb were on the attack right at the start. A quick one-two between Juan Manuel Gutiérrez de Cos and Lee Song was followed by the latter's booming shot going between the grasp of superstar goalie Mark Bosnich and richocheting off the crossbar and into the stands.

From the resultant goalkick, Zagreb veteran Mihael Rajic rose highest above Malmö strikers David Nakani and Damien Watkins to head the ball. His determined grimace said it all. "I'm not going to let this title slip out of my grasp. It's been one time too many."

Indeed, it has been one heartbreak after another for the Croatian club in Division 3C over the last few seasons. Old hands have come and gone, have given their best for the club without seeing any visible rewards. The older players like Rajic, Lee and Damir Milinovic know it is their last chance to contribute and while they may not be there to enjoy the fruits of their success come the next season, they're determined to do it for the rest of the lads, for the club. The passion is so visible, the hunger is there too, etched on every one of their faces. 'We may not be the strongest, but we're certainly the best.' That belief, together with the contributions of the younger players like Rados and Arne Repvik, have been more or less the reason why they are fighting up there this season.

And so it was in the 18th minute that Gutiérrez de Cos' swirling ball was brought down by Rados at the right edge of the box. Fernandes dives in desperately from behind but the Zagreb youngster simply skips past his challenge. Pablo Giamarchi attempts to push him off the ball but Rados shrugs him off before curling a sweet shot into the far left corner of the net, despite Bosnich's best attempts to claw it away. All the time in the world, it seemed, Rados had all the time he needed. Such was his ability that it was as if time stopped before his foot hit the ball. I don't deny my heart was in my mouth as Rados executed the coup de grace. Perfection. Amazing,

And so it was all one way for the rest of the match, as the home side played their opponents off the pitch. Their captain's first goal of the season was enough to seperate the boys from the men.

And it's Half-time...

By Wankazashi

It's just past the halfway point of the season and our esteemed Japanese tipster Wankazashi takes a close look at the club sitting pretty at the top of the Division 3C table, Dinamo Zagreb. As a team, they have been unbeaten in the league so far, a record that while manager Jatex Cole attributes to the "powers-may-be", is a more than fitting tribute to the current team who have literally worked their socks off.

Ivo Rados
Appearances (League): 16(10)
Goals: 0
Assists: 4(4)
moms: 8(5)
Ave Rating: 7.6(7.7)
Wanka's Rating: 9
The Zagreb captain has certainly come to the fore with his displays in midfield this season. He has finally matured into a first-class deep-lying attacking midfielder and is equally comfortable on the wing. Rados has a great all-round game and has been showing the aptitude required to lead a team. Needs to improve on his temperament and needs to score more though.

Olexandr Buryi
Appearances: 12(11)
Goals: 4(2)
Assists: 5(4)
moms: 0
Ave Rating: 6.8(6.8)
Wanka's Rating: 8
This Ukranian international backs a mean punch and he has certainly showed it this season. He is a potent midfield player who adds a new dimension to the centre of the pitch with his ability to shoot from range and spot the killer pass. His two goals and an assist in his sole appearance for Ukraine this season showed his class.

Juan Manuel Gutiérrez de Cos
Appearances: 12(12)
Goals: 3(3)
Assists: 2(2)
moms: 0
Ave Rating: 7.1(7.1)
Wanka's Rating: 7.5
The Spanish forward has long been hailed as the next big thing but has only broken fully into the first team this season. Has been one of the mainstays in the squad with his lightning pace and impressive shooting. Is in need of a good strike partner to back him up at the moment though. Gutiérrez de Cos has also reportedly attracted the attention of some clubs but is not likely to move in the near future.

Sasha Sabick
Appearances: 12(12)
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
moms: 0
Ave Rating: 6.9(6.9)
Wanka's Rating: 7
The Zagreb keeper has been in top form this season, rarely putting a foot wrong. He is one of the main reasons why Zagreb has only let in two goals so far in the league. Is good in the air and has kept his first team place ahead of the emerging Marcel Need.

Luis González
Appearances:12(11)
Goals: 1(1)
Assists: 0
moms: 2(2)
Ave Rating: 6.8(6.9)
Wanka's Rating: 7
The Argentinian midfield maestro is also Zagreb's vice-captain. His excellent displays in midfield this season have held the team together. Strong and reliable, he has proved a good buy and we will hopefully see more from this influential player.

Iñaki
Appearances: 11(11)
Goals: 1(1)
Assists: 1(1)
moms: 0
Ave Rating: 7.1(7.1)
Wanka's Rating: 7
The spaniard has been in good form this season, linking up well with teamates on the pitch. While his attacking instincts have always been there, Iñaki has added a defensive edge to his repertoire this season, enabling Rados to go onthe attack more often.

Arne Repvik
Appearances: 13(12)
Goals: 1(1)
Assists: 0
moms: 0
Ave Rating: 6.4(6.5)
Wanka's Rating: 7
A pre-season buy from Brann, Repvik is a strong defender who goes about his work quietly. Reliable and tidy at the back, the defender has been putting in some praise-worthy displays for the Blues.

Igor Morozov
Appearances: 11(11)
Goals: 0
Assists: 1(1)
moms: 1(1)
Ave Rating: 6.2(6.2)
Wanka's Rating: 7
This imposing defender is strong in the air and has good technical ability, making him a must-have in the Zagreb defence this season. An early season trade from Atletico Madrid, Morozov has won the fans over with some fine displays.

Mihael Rajic
Appearances: 14(11)
Goals: 0
Assists: 1(0)
moms: 0
Ave Rating: 6.1(6.3)
Wanka's Rating: 7
Age has certainly not slowed down Rajic as he still figures in the Zagreb defence. He is one of the main reasons for the club;s excellent defensive record as he is often deployed behind the main defence as the sweeper, clearing up the through balls and protecting his 'keeper.

Peter Michael
Appearances: 12(11)
Goals: 0
Assists: 0
moms: 0
Ave Rating: 6.5(6.5)
Wanka's Rating: 7
Michael is a traditional centreback in the sense that he rarely goes foward in what is mainly an attacking team. The Australian prefers to stay back to support his teamates and is on hand when a counter-attack happens. Has been on generally good form this season.

Lee Song
Appearances: 6(4)
Goals: 3(2)
Assists: 0
moms: 1(1)
Ave Rating: 7.2(7.3)
Wanka's Rating: 7
The Chinese forward has found first team playing opportunities scarce but has taken the most of his chances with Ruslan Kostishin in patchy form.

Damir Milinovic
Appearances: 10(9)
Goals: 1(0)
Assists: 1(1)
moms: 0
Ave Rating: 6.2(6.1)
Wanka's Rating: 7
The vastly experienced Damir Milinovic is looked upon with respect in the Zagreb dressing room and has been utterly reliable when called upon to fill up gaps that appear due to suspension in defence. A vital part of the team.

Ruslan Kostishin
Appearances: 10(10)
Goals: 2(2)
Assists: 0
moms: 0
Ave Rating: 6.2(6.2)
Wanka's Rating: 6
Zagreb's star striker has not been up to his usual lofty high standards so far this season, and has been failing to stamp his authority on games. Morale is a problem but fans are hopeful he will get better.

Thomas Winklhofer
Appearances: 6(2)
Goals: 1(1)
Assists 2(0)
moms: 1(0)
Ave Rating: 6.2(6.5)
Wanka's Rating: 6
"Wink" has yet to show what he is capable of, occasionally coming to life when playing, but generally has been in less-than-satisfactory form. Has found it hard to break into the first team this season.

Dinamo Zagreb 1 - 0 ASK Inter Bratislava

Lee's strike makes all the difference

Masksimir, Zagreb, Croatia

Division 3C - The match between the top and bottom teams of the league went as expected as Zagreb held possession for most of the match, needing only a fine Lee Song goal to settle matters.

Blues striker Ruslan Kostishin was dropped to the bench for the first time this season, giving Lee Song a starting berth at the opening whistle. The Chinese forward made the most of his chance, looking lively as he displayed a good understanding with strike partner Juan Manuel Gutiérrez de Cos. The latter was the reason that several scouts were reportedly in the stands watching the match but it could not be ascertained from which clubs they came from.

Inter Bratislava were obviously on instructions to stop their opponents at all costs and they responded as if they were going to battle. It took only 5 minutes for the first caution to be awarded as Jorge Barrera Toscano went clattering into Zagreb captain Ivo Rados, with absolutely no intention to go for the ball. The Croatian side were obviously getting a little rattled by the rough treatment being metted out and Peter Michael had to go off to seek treatment for a head wound midway through the first half.

Spaniard David Pirri was visibly struggling to keep up with the match in midfield for A.S.K and the visitors suffered as a result. Iñaki was running rings around him and the home side started to slip into the smooth passing routine that they were used to.

Olexandr Buryi's through ball in the 68th minute sent Lee Song through and the nippy forward made no mistake as he sent the ball spinning past a diving Jérôme Alonzo.

Australian defender Peter Michael will miss the next match against FC Skonto Riga after the yellow card he received in this match.

Monaco AS 0 - 1 Dinamo Zagreb

Early goal settles titanic battle at Louis II

Stade Louis II, Monaco, France
Division 3C - Dinamo Zagreb visited Monaco in what had been billed as the match that could decide the season, and came away with the spoils after a hard fought encounter. In a match that lacked goals after Olexandr Buryi's 6th minute stunner, it more than made up with end to end action.

Notable absentees in Zagreb's side were veteran defensive stalwart Mihael Rajic and influential midfielder Luis González, while Monaco were sorely missing the services of Yngvar Hekonsen, their Norweigan defensive linchpin.

Both managers were forced to make enforced substitutions as a result of these suspensions. Monaco's David Sutton chose to stick with his usual 3-5-2 formation, with Hakan Gökhan Sas slotting into defence and Davide De Luigi taking his place in midfield, though in a more defensive postion. Zagreb's gaffer Jatex Cole, however, had a few tricks up his sleeves, as he switched to an adventurous 4-3-3 formation for the second consecutive match, a stark contrast to his usual more cautious 4-4-2 lineup. The Blues were helped by captain Ivo Rados' return from suspension, while Damir Milinovic took over from Rajic.

The visitors' changes made all the difference as they came out firing on all cylinders. First off the starter's block was a revitalised Ruslan Kostishin, racing onto an Arne Repvik through-ball and blasting at goal from 20 yards out. The keeper was well-beaten but the upright spurned his advances.

The home side had their hearts in their mouths as the Croatian club poured forward in droves. Even the defenders were involved and it wasn't long before something happened. Rados sidestepped a sliding challenge from Lionel Mathis, then flicked the ball up with his instep and played a cross-field square pass to a lurking Damir Milinovic, who had come deep on the attack. Sascha Rohmann ran back to cover, but he arrived seconds late as Milinovic cut back the ball precisely. Buryi outsprinted a lumbering Frantisek Bubenko before smashing his shot high into the net past a stunned Stefan Solhaug on the goal line. As the Ukranian ran off in celebration, the Monaco crowd was shocked into near-silence as many held their heads in their hands.

It could have been worse for the home team, but Solhaug managed a crisp save from Lee Song's shot in the 61st minute and two minutes later did well to turn the ball around the post one-handed after Juan Manuel Gutiérrez de Cos had done well to shake off his marker. The three Monaco defenders were obviously struggling to keep up with the high tempo of the game, and were not helped by the fact that they faced three opposition stikers with Rados' just behind them in support. However, Turkish utility man Sas was in good form, helping out his teamates when the need arose, such that Monaco managed to reach the break relatively unscathed apart from the one goal.

Monaco looked more composed after the break, winning two corners in succession, but they failed to really trouble the away team's defence. Chris Sutton was looking sharp in front of goal, and was more or less ably supported by his strike partner Johan Maes, but there was never going to be many opportunites with their midfield in disarray. Somehow, the five man midfield was being comprehensively outclassed by three players on the other side. Buryi and Iñaki are generally attacking players but they were aware enough to stay behind Rados during the latter's runs at goal and closed down the counter-attacks brlliantly. Monaco was seeing much more of the ball this time round, but Arne Repvik stood out among the Zagreb defence, clearing long balls and shadowing Sutton as the former Celtic man tried to win the game for Monaco all on his own. Sasha Sabick in the Zagreb goal was in good form too as he didn't seem top put a foot wrong the whole afternoon.

As the whistle sounded for full-time, the Zagreb players were visibly ecstatic as they celebrated a vital win, but the Monaco players were understandably devastated as they fell back to 5 points behind the leaders. It seemed Cole's trump card had worked, but Sutton was still in shock at what had happened and vowed to find out what had gone wrong. He stated that he would review the game the next day, but was of the opinion that Hekonsen's absence had hurt the team.

Dinamo coach Cole told the paper that he was delighted at the win, but stressed that "complacency is still a no-no".

"Don't even go there," he said, "I'm sure the lads will be celebrating tonight, but tomorrow it's back to training. We've got a match against A.S.K. Inter Bratislava to prepare for and we just can't let up."

Cole also expressed delight that the whole squad was available for selection, adding that the best players would get to play but said that the team had to learn to cope without captain Rados at times, before once again praising the Man of the Match for his form this season.

Rados, Repvik and Sutton made the Team of the Round for Division 3C.

In other news, Zagreb reserves will be playing Arsenal at Highbury this Thursday. The manager is expected to give the youths and fringe players a run-out.

Dinamo Zagreb 2 - 1 K.A.A. Gent

Lee stars in fine attacking display

Maksimir, Zagreb, Croatia
Division 3C - Recalled Chinese striker Lee Song added to the growing list of reasons why his manager should play him when he led the frontline brilliantly in the absence of captain Ivo Rados. Strike partner Ruslan Kostishin, on the other hand, flopped miserably once again and was booed off the pitch by unforgiving Croatian supporters.

Zagreb, missing the services of their star player, opted for an attacking 4-3-3 formation for the first time this season, with the manager electing to reinstate Lee instead of playing Thomas Winklhofer in midfield as many insiders expected him to do. The move paid dividends as Zagreb looked more dangerous then they had done in recent matches.

Gent showed that they were not going to be pushovers on the night as they took an early lead after 18 minutes, and it was by no means undeserved. Wisbell Isea had been booked for a rough challenge on Zagreb defender Igor Morozov, but when play restarted, he charged down Morozov's free kick and diverted the ball to an alert Assi Gabai. The Israeli lured Mihael Rajic to the left wing, where he evaded the defender's wild tackle and crossed into the box. Isea was first to the ball and headed past a bewildered Sasha Sabick for the opening goal. The home support was shocked into near silence, and the only noise was the small travelling band of supporters cheering their hearts out. However, Zagreb right-back gave Sabick a pat on the bum, as if to say "It's alright mate, we'll get back in no time at all," before waving his teamates on to the restart. The home crowd roared it's approval. In fact, the goal was only the second time the Zagreb defence had been breached in the league all season so far.

The home side started to find their feet, with Lee and Juan Manuel Gutiérrez de Cos looking hungry for goals. With the largely partisan crowd egging them on, they started taking potshots at the goal. The Gent defence was on high alert, and captain Haavard Jonassen had to sprint back and clear off the line as his keeper was beaten by a low bouncing shot from Lee. The home side, though, didn't have long to wait. Iñaki, in midfield, saw the opportunity for a quick break, and sent a high pass over the heads of Gent midfielders Iván Díaz González and Eivind Østerhus. Olexandr Buryi was on the recieving end and didn't hesitate, clipping the ball forward with the outside of his foot. It was a no-look pass and a brilliant piece of individual skill from the Ukranian. Gutiérrez de Cos took advantage of the disarray in the box to slide the ball past Ristani's despairing dive in goal. Zagreb were back on level terms, and with their dictating of the match, it looked a matter of time before they were ahead.

However, the referee had other ideas. In the 62nd minute, the home crowd was incensed when Nicola Ventola aimed a sneaky kick at Zagreb sweeper Mihael Rajic after losing the ball fairly. Rajic, feeling the blow on his ankle, turned and let loose with a groin kick. Ventola's eyeballs bulged out of it's socket as he crumpled to the floor and started writhing in agony, all the while with his hands clamped tightly on his nether regions. Ref Theo Neumann had no hesitation in sending Rajic off. Surprisingly, Ventola got off scott-free, and was stretchered off to the sidelines as the Gent physios rushed to treat him. He got his just desserts though, as he returned to play twenty minutes later, limping up and down the pitch with an awkward gait.

Two minutes after Ventola's return, Lee turned on the works with a clinical goal. Buryi was once again the provider as he dispossesed Østerhus and played Lee in. Lee could have gone for broke with the defenders retreating and Ristani scrambling back to cover, but instead chose to run at the defenders. He easily rounded a stumbling Ventola and powered the ball towards goal. Ristani was inches away as the ball bulged the back of the net. The game was effectively over and the job done as all the fight went out of the visitors.

Lee received the Man of the Match award for his efforts, but surprisingly failed to make the Team of the Round while his teamates Gutiérrez de Cos and Michael did. This prompted murmers of racism but they were brushed off gracefully by the Chinese forward.

Dinamo manager Jatex Cole was understandably pleased with the result, and had this to say, "I'm glad for Lee Song. He's worked hard in training and now he's got his chance and shown what he can do, he'll definitely be the better for it. I'm worried about the next match against Monaco though. It'll be a big clash, a potential title-decider and a wicked looking banana skin for my club. Ivo (Rados) will be back but Luis (González) will be unavailable after his booking today, not to mention Mihael (Rajic) getting sent off."

On the Rajic incident, Cole flashed a mischievious grin, "He asked for it didn't he? Rajic got rightly sent off and it made things a little harder for us with a man down, but I'm sure he'll learn a lesson from this. I'm not blaming the referee for letting Ventola get away, he's probably suffering enough now... I'll let you in on a secret then. Mihael's been taking jujitsu lessons and he got so pumped up on the pitch that he probably forgot where he was for a moment. I'll have a quiet word with him but I'll not be taking any further action with the lad. He's old enough to know what to do."

Zganec out, Farran Nakajima in

Reserve striker leaves for greener pastures

Dinamo Zagreb striker Damir Zganec has signed for Brazilian club Santos after passing a medical. Zganec, who has not played a game this season, either competitively or non-competitively had earlier been put on the transfer list after he requested a move. The manager apparently agreed to let him go after receiving enquiries from clubs for the for the former Hadjuk Split hitman. The move cost Santos in the region of £6m, and this will be Zganec's second spell at the club following a short spell a year ago. Zganec made the move in time to play in the 2-1 win over Los Angeles Galaxy.

Meanwhile, Zagreb have captured Japanese youngster Issey Morgan Farran Nakajima from Rayo Vallecano for a cut-down price of £1.6m. The teenage midfielder has already been capped once by his national side and at the tender age of 19 looks to have been a steal. Ono was bought for £5m from Basel FC 6 days prior to his latest switch, but in a surprise move, was deemed surplus to requirements and offloaded at a loss. It seems Rayo's loss is Zagreb's gain.

Zagreb duo set for loan deals

Frohlich, Keane return to club

Australian midfielder Tim Cahill and Brazilian anchorman Elano are set to move on loan to Al Muludia and Brann respectively, the club confirmed this morning.

A spokesman for the club stated that in order to help these players gain more first team experience, Zagreb had decided to loan them out.

Going the other way were promising young defender Fabricio Frohlich, who has been capped 6 times for Brazil, but found playing opportunities scarce at Brann and thus decided to come back to the club early, and Irish centreback Roy Keane, who's one month loan at Montreal Impact ended.

Paris Saint-Germain 0 - 0 Dinamo Zagreb

Drab draw as Zagreb stay top

Le Parc des Princes, Paris, France
Division 3C - 45000 fans watched Paris Saint-Germain and Dinamo Zagreb share the spoils at Le Parc des Princes, ensuring that Zagreb kept a slender 1 point lead at the top of Division 3C. Monaco AS had earlier lost to Malmö FF, ensuring that Zagreb were not overtaken but the signs were there that the Croatian club needs improving if they are to go all the way in the promotion race this season.

Dinamo's Australian defender Peter Michael had been rested after his exertions for his country previously, but Damir Milinovic made the most of his chance in the first team, showing glimpses of his old form as he marshalled the defence. Ruslan Kostishin was again having an off-day in front of goal, increasing speculation over whether his days at the club are numbered. In fact, Zagreb's players seemed to have been playing while asleep, creating little and seemingly content to pass the ball in the centre of the pitch.

The home team were equally lacklustre, with the exception being Man of the Match and goalkeeper Radu Borets who once again capped an excellent display with several splendid saves throughout the game. Other than Borets, former Zagreb reject Jari Mäkelä played as if he had something to prove, making good runs and showing tactical awareness in midfield. In only his third league appearance standing in for Josko Kurtovic who was prevented from playing against his own club as stipulated in his loan contract, Mäkelä outshone his more illustrious teamates, including the 73k rated veteran Mário Silva, who seemed to have disappeared from the game.

In fact, the first scoring chance only came in the 36th minute, when Juan Manuel Gutiérrez de Cos' cross-shot was palmed away bu Borets and out for a corner kick. Rados' excellent lob to the near post was met by the head of Milinovic but Borets proved equal to the task with a good reflex save.
Iñaki had a good chance to open accounts right after the break but screwed his shot into the stands after having been put through by Rados. P.S.G's sweeper Paulo Sergio Litos also cleared off the line in the 72nd minute as the pressure mounted. On the resulting counterattack, Manel Hurtado went free of his marker but shot disappointingly into the side netting.

As full time drew closer, Zagreb captain Rados seemed like a man possessed, fighting tigerishly for possession as he tried to lift his team mates, but it was to no avail as he only earned himself a booking that will rule him out of the next match in 4 days time.

Litos almost won the game for the hosts in the dying seconds with a firm header, but Sasha Sabick in the Zagreb goal was alert enough to punch the ball clear.

Dinamo's next match will be against K.A.A Gent at home, and while that may not seem such a stern test as P.S.G on paper, the Blues have to improve drastically if they do not want to lose their position at the top of the table.

Dinamo Zagreb 1 - 0 C.S.K.A Moscow

League leaders grind out yet another win

Maksimir, Zagreb, Croatia
Division 3C - "Boring boring Dinamo" was the chant from opposition supporters on Saturday as the league leaders once again made things hard for themselves with a slim win over C.S.K.A Moscow.

The Croatian club failed to turn possession into goals as they tormented C.S.K.A with slick passing and barely broke sweat during the match. Returning defender Damir Milinovic received a rousing reception during his first home debut of the season and showed he wasn't going to take things for granted as he went into a crunching tackle on C.S.K.A forward Jacques Pollet with only 15 seconds on the clock. The referee flashed an early yellow card but Milinovic was more bemused then angry at having been booked so early in the game.

Peter Stam, the Russian club's Dutch defender was having a torrid time at centreback but the visitors somehow managed to escape unscathed at the break as Zagreb suffered from some woeful finishing. Most of the action was going on in the C.S.K.A half, but Lee Song still looked a little rusty on his first league start in place of Ruslan Kostishin and lost the ball a little too easily early on.

2 minutes before half time, Zagreb captain Ivo Rados' challenge on Pontus Farnerud left the Swede writhing on the ground. Although there seemed to be no infraction, the referee consulted with his assistant before awarding a free kick and booking Rados. As the home fans howled their disgust, Farnerud was stretchered off to the sidelines for treatment.

The home team started the second half with much more urgency, as news filtered in that third-placed AS Jeunesse Esch was leading 1-0 at half time. The Russian club's defence was stretched to breaking point, and when the goal finally came, it was spectacular to say the least. Ivo Rados, playing in an advanced role in the hole behind the two forwards, played a quick one-two with Lee, before taking the ball to the right of goal. An excellent feint to the left sent Ivan Kholodkov to the floor and as goalkeeper Ståle Pettersen came out to challenge, Rados somehow flicked the ball between Pettersen's legs and into the air. Juan Manuel Gutiérrez de Cos had somehow sneaked into the box and smashed the ball emphatically into the net with an acrobatic half-volley from the far post.

After getting the first goal, Zagreb slowed down some, allowing their opponents more breathing space, although Sasha Sabick still had pitifully little to do in the Zagreb goal. The scores could have been increased in the 83rd minute, but Rados' audacious lob from outside the box hit the crossbar and out for a goalkick with the goalkeeper well beaten. Olexandr Buryi too, was sent free by a quick free kick, but was crowded out by four defenders before his shot hit the upright and rebounded into the arms of a grateful Pettersen.

The game ended with Zagreb having had 58% of the overall possession, but their manager Jatex Cole was less than happy, "Against a club like C.S.K.A, this performance might have been enough, but when we face some of the bigger guns, we might find ourselves outplayed."

He then went on to demand more out of his attack, stating that the defence had been solid so far but goals, and not cleansheets, won games after all.

Ivo Rados was named Man of the Match yet again for his performance, as he once again confirmed his reputation as one of the brightest young prospects in Footballglory.

C.S Maritmo 1 - 1 Dinamo Zagreb

Two red cards meted out in ill-tempered match

Campo Municipal, Portugal
Division 3C - Eight yellow cards were handed out in the match between C.S Maritimo and their visitors, Dinamo Zagreb as tensions threathened to spill over. The draw was perhaps a fair reflection of the match as neither side managed to keep hold of possession for sustained periods of the game.

Zagreb defender Igor Morozov was booked as early as the 7th minute as a mistimed challenge brought down opposing forward Nando Sanchez. Wingert Kalle Kurki was looking lively for the Portugese team while Zagreb had a shot on goal from Ivo Rados well saved by Stijn Stijnen in the first half. António Alexandre was then booked for hotly disputing an offside decision but his team mate João Almeida showed that the lesson was not learnt when he received a yellow card under similar circumstances 9 minutes later. The first half ended scoreless but not before Alexandre had got himself sent off for a shove on Iñaki, who had clearly got the better of him on the left wing.

The second half was more lively, as Zagreb started to exploit the space left unattended by a 10-men Maritimo. Although there were much more chances, Zagreb striker Ruslan Kostishin was having a bad day once again and fluffed two gilt-edged opportunities. The first was when he overkicked and sent the ball blazing over from 10 yards out after a fine cross from Rados while the second came after he tripped on the ball following a run into the box.

It wasn't until the 60th minute when Iñaki struck for the visitors were the scores opened. Olexandr Buryi collected the ball on the edge of the box and played Iñaki in. There seemed to be little danger, but Bernd Ott slipped while tracking the Spaniard and Iñaki made no mistake, slipping the ball past Stijnen. Kostishin then earned further displeasure from his manager when he collected a yellow card for bundling Alan Silva over just outside the box, ruling him out of the next match against C.S.K.A Moscow.

However, Zagreb found their numerical advantage negated in the 78th minute when Morozov was sent off for a second bookable offence, injuring Kurki when he clattered clumsily into him. Kurki was carried off but came back after two minutes of treatment on the sidelines. Zagreb were stunned and Nando Sanchez took advantage of it to score a trademark goal 6 minutes before the end of regulation time. He ghosted into the Zagreb penalty area, trapped a through ball from Roman Zavadil and sent a crisp shot into the bottom right hand corner of Sasha Sabick's net. Alan Silva came close to pulling off a great fightback for Maritimo when Sabick palmed a stinging Sanchez shot into his path but he somehow contrived to miss from 5 metres out.

Both Ukranians Morozov and Kostishin will recieve one match bans that will rule them out of the next game, but Damir Milinovic and Lee Song will probably be on hand to deputise for them.

Zagreb manager Jatex Cole said after the match that he was disappointed with his team's performance on the day, but also pointed out that the goal was the first they had conceded in the league so far this season. Zagreb is still one point above A.S Monaco, and two above A.S Jeunesse Esch and FK Vardar. Their fans will be fervently hoping that their poor form does not spill over into the next match as Zagreb fight for their long awaited promotion.

Back Where He Belongs

Milinovic back at Zagreb; Promises to show form of old

Former club captain Damir Milinovic was transferred back to Dinamo Zagreb yesterday in a shock move, leading to jubilant fans rejoicing outside the grounds of the club.

Milinovic, who was transferred to Brann at the end of the last season, told assembled reporters that he was extremely glad to be back and would do his utmost to help the club achieve great things.

Milinovic was told near the end of last season by manager Jatex Cole that his playing chances were to be limited the next season and when Brann came calling, he found their offer too good to resist. Although he has featured consistenly in Brann's games this season and done reasonably well, it seemed the call of his beloved club ensured he would return sooner than later.

Cole had hinted on Saturday after the game with Inter Bratislava that the transfer of a first-class centre-back was eminent, but nobody guessed that Milinovic would make the move back to the grounds.

Cole told the gathered journalists, "Damir may not be able to run as fast now, but he's still got the quality to play at the highest level and that's what we will be expecting from him. He's back where he belongs and of course we're all here heppy for him. The baclline has been strengthened and I can see no reason why he can't go on to achieve his previous form for the club. Damir holds the club's all-time most matches played record, and his tremendous experience will be invaluable."

As part of the transfer, reserve team English midfielder Mark Picking moved in the opposite direction. Picking had been bought from Basel FC some time back, but found first team chances limited. Cole was reported to have wished him the best of luck at his new club.

Zagreb will face CS Maritimo later today and one suspects that Milinovic will at least be on the bench even if he does not make the first eleven.

A.S.K Inter Bratislava 0 - 3 Dinamo Zagreb

Kostishin marks return to form with brace

Pasienky, Bratislava, Slovakia
Division 3C - A resurgent Zagreb side ripped apart current division bottom-dwellers A.S.K Inter Bratislava as strikers Ruslan Kostishin and Juan Manuel Gutiérrez de Cos ran riot.

It was always only ever going to go one way, as Dinamo Zagreb comfortably regained sole owners of the top spot after Monaco's shock loss to A.S Jeunesse Esch earlier in the day. Ivo Rados earned himself a yellow card early on in the 9th minute for mooning the referee after a disallowed long range goal but it was only going to be a matter of time before a goal was registered, and everybody and his dog knew which side would get the goal.

As usual, Bratislava manager Mats Bang Pedersen was missing from the bench as the assistant coach tried to keep the players going. His exhortions were not going to stop the inevitable when Zagreb got their first goal from a set piece 15 minutes before half time. Gutiérrez de Cos' outswinging corner kick was met superbly by Arne Repvik, who managed a clean drive off the underside of the bar and into the goal. Jérôme Alonzo, who was back in the first team for Bratislava after an injury that kept him out of the first few league games, could do nothing as his defenders failed to help him out.

Zagreb were toying around with their opposition, showing off deft tricks and generally showboating to the delight of the away crowd. The halftime score read 1 - 0 as the players trooped back into the dressing rooms with the Blues in high spirits. Even the Zagreb manager couldn't keep a straight face as he visibly reprimanded his charges for not putting the game beyond reach.

Kostishin was looking dangerous after a rough scoreless patch so far this season. His first goal in six starts came three minutes after the restart as he played a neat one-two with Gutiérrez de Cos before speeding past a befuddled Egil Ulfstein and slotting the ball past Alonzo. By this time, Bratislava's Spanish midfielder David Pirri was struggling to keep up with the pace of the match, looking terribly jaded and out-of-breath. However, the Footballglory league rules not allowing substitutions ensured that the home team could do nothing about it. Olexandr Buryi took great advantage of his tired marker, carving the midfield wide open and sending more and more Zagreb players through to besiege the oppostion goal.

The icing on the cake was duly delivered in the 84th minute as a superb clearance from Igor Morozov saw Kostishin trap the ball perfectly and seemingly without having to catch his balance, flow into the Bratislava goal and shoot past a static Alonzo. The Bratislava players appealed against the goal for offside but referee Hoyzer was adamant. Clear goal, he reiterated.

Morozov claimed the Man of the Match award and was one of three players to make it to the Team of the Round together with Juan Manuel Gutiérrez de Cos and Olexandr Buryi.

Zagreb manager Jatex Cole was coy about his team's title chances, but praised his team for their unbeaten streak in the league and their amazing record of no goals let in at all so far. He also hinted that a deal was in the works to strengthen Zagreb's backline with yet another defender. We can only wait.

Dinamo Zagreb 0 - 2 Tromsø

Zagreb bow out to top seeds

Maksimir, Zagreb, Croatia
Cup - Dinamo Zagreb went down bravely to top seeds Tromsø in the cup yesterday. The result was expected but Tromsø manager Daniel Myrberg looked to be taking no chances, fielding a star-studded lineup that should have more than swept the home side away. However, a second-string Zagreb side played their hearts out for 90 minutes, and left the pitch with heads held high.

Tromsø fielded a squad with 9 players with wages higher than 80K. Morten Olsen with 75K and young Karim Essediri with 52K were the only exceptions. Zagreb were playing a 3-5-2 formation, with the team being led ably by team captain and vice-captain Ivo Rados and Luis González. The young backline was at no time during the match overwhelmed as they seemed to hold their own against the opposition.

"They are sensible lads. I was a bit afraid that they would be overawed by the occasion, but I decided it was more than time to let them have a taste of the big match," Manager Jatex Cole later commented on his decision to field youngsters in the team.

The match had only been on for 8 minutes when a delightful cross by Tromsø sweeper Alain Roche evaded the heads of the Zagreb defenders and Karim Essediri was on hand to smash the ball pass Sasha Sabick in goal. It was 1-0 and it looked like things were going to go very smoothly for Tromsø. But it wasn't until the 40th minute when a wild clearance by Christian Oetling was intercepted by Morten Olsen was the score increased. The Dane took one glance and curled the ball into the far left corner of the net. Tromsø defender Grégory Verhoeven was then booked for taunting the home fans after the goal. Zagreb held on till the break, but it looked like it was going to get worse before long.

However, after the break, Rados and striker Lee Song seemed to have taken it to their heads that they had to lead by example, tracking back deep into defence at times to help clear the ball. Even though Tromsø held the final possession rate at 59%, the Zagreb defence was not breached for the rest of the half, and the Zagreb players left the by-now muddy pitch to a standing ovation.

Tromsø manager Daniel Myrberg was not available for comment as he was quickly ushered into his private helicopter after the match.

Dinamo Zagreb 0 - 0 F.C Skonto Riga

Croatian team post dour draw in absence of captain

Maksimir, Zagreb, Croatia
Division 3C - An in form F.C Skonto Riga pulled off an upset of sorts as they held league leaders Dinamo Zagreb to a draw at Maksimir. Zagreb held on to register their fifth shut-out of the season, but the lack of goals only served to highlight their toothless attack in front of goal. This season has seen Zagreb only scoring on four occasions in the league, with all of them coming in their first three games.

While this preserved Zagreb's unbeaten run in Division 3C so far, Zagreb manager Jatex Cole was far from pleased with his side's performance. Zagreb has stuttered of late, also being held to a goaless draw in it's previous match. It certainly looks as if the early-season momentum has slowed down, and if Cole doesn't ring in the changes fast, it is believed that this may be yet another fruitless season for the Croatian club.

Zagreb had lost much of their attacking thrust due to the absence of it's skipper Ivo Rados, who missed the game through suspension. Rados had been sent off in the previous match against Malmo after a second bookable offence and had to put up with watching the match from the stands. However, such was the poor display of his forwards, that Cole was later said to be considering recalling out-of-favour Chinese striker Lee Song to the first team squad to boost the attack.

The match started promisingly in a light drizzle, with the home side having most of the possession. Luis González, the stand in captain, was acquiting himself well, but nobody else seemed to be doing anything much. Skonto Riga looked to be happy with sitting deep in their own half and absorbing the Zagreb attacks. Huo Zhiyu had his first league start of the season in place of Rados, after a fine two-goal showing against Rio Ave in the Cup, but failed to produce anything other than what was expected of him.

Zagreb goalie Sasha Sabick was largely untroubled, plucking a few stray crosses from the air, and once coming out smartly to save at the feet of opposition striker Arve Walde.

Two Skonto players were booked early on in quick succession as a dangerous two-footed tackle by Kaya Mehmet on Thomas Winklhofer was not missed by the referee. He had no choice but to flash the yellow card as the Skonto players gathered around him. Skonto keeper Dave Bult was then shown another yellow for excessive protesting when he was allegedly seen pointing a middle finger and gesticulating at the referee.

None of the Skonto players really excelled that night, and it was more down to Zagreb's woeful finishing that the night ended scoreless for both teams. Juan Manuel Gutiérrez de Cos had a good outing for Zagreb, but González was to take the post-match plaudits for his performance on the night.

Skonto Riga manager Paul Melamed was not available for comment after the match, but he was reportedly pleased with the result that put a solid three points in between his club and the relegation zone.

Malmo F.F 0 - 0 Dinamo Zagreb

Spoils shared in top of table clash

Malmö Stadion, Sweden
Division 3C - Leaders Dinamo Zagreb ground out a boring stalemate at second-placed Malmo yesterday, having to play the last 3 minutes plus injury time without their influential captain Ivo Rados.

Rados was sent off in the closing stages of a dour match for a second bookable offence, a reckless high lunge on opposing captain and Man of the Match Sigurvin Olafsson, which almost decapitated the Icelandic international. Without even waiting for his marching orders, Rados left the field as a minor meelee broke out. Rados had earlier been yellow-carded for an altercation with Mark Bosnich at the other end of the pitch, which also resulted in the Malmo keeper being booked. Bosnich had apparently taunted Rados about his manager being better than Zagreb's and the players had scuffled. Rados had a small cut below his left eye while Bosnich was sporting two black eyes and a cauliflower ear after the incident.

Dinamo Zagreb keeper Sasha Sabick was outstanding on the night, making good saves from Olafsson, but the latter ultimately outshone him as he carried the bulk of his team's attacks throughout the match.

Both sides were playing for keeps, defending deep and making occasional darting runs into the other half of the field as the players fumbled for possession. A few players were largely anonymous and only one corner was awarded in Zagreb's favour early in the first half.

After the match, Malmo manager Jason Tan refused to shake the Zagreb manager's hand as several players continued arguing while heading for the dressing rooms.

At the press conference, Tan claimed that Bosnich was the finest keeper in the division, boasting that "until now no one has got past Bosnich yet". He then went on to state that he had been expeting either a "win or a draw" from the match, such was their superiority over the rest of the division.

Zagreb manager Cole responded angrily to Tan's claims later, saying that Tan was showing his arrogant side even though he had failed to do "anything substantially impressive as of yet". He also pointed out that Bosnich had only played 2 league games in the Division 3C so far, while Zagreb goalkeeper Sasha Sabick had played all 4 and had kept consecutive clean sheets too. "If you ask me, I think none let in from 4 games is much better than none from 2."

Adding further fuel to the debate was the announcement that Sabick had made the Team of the Round together with Olafsson.

On Rados' sending off, Cole told reporters that he would have to review the match video before coming to a conclusion. However, he stated his belief that the first booking had been unwarranted due to Bosnich's taunting. "He gave as good as he got though," Cole joked. Rados will be suspended for the next match against Skonto Riga and a panel will sit down to review his sending off and decide on a possible further ban next week.

Rio Ave 1 - 4 Dinamo Zagreb

Zagreb to face Tromsø next

Estadio dos Arcos, Portugal
Cup - A second string Zagreb side swept aside Div 4 club Rio Ave in Portugal in the second round cup tie as the club recorded their fourth straight win of the season.

Manager Cole had decided to rest most of his first team, leaving captain Ivo Rados the sole retainee from the early-week 1-0 win over fk Vardar. However, Zagreb was not lacking in experience, with old hands Elrio van Heerden, David Bentley and Lee Song complemented by reserve team members Huo Zhiyu, Mark Picking and Marek Kotas and rounded off with some up and coming youths.

Rados had a good day in the middle of the park once again, earning the Man of the Match award though he did not have an assist or a goal. He was all over the field, running back to tidy up stray balls and launching numerous attacks forward.

It took only 28 minutes for Zagreb to open it's account, with Anders Sæternes' through ball allowing Huo to finish with a simple tap-in. The Rio defense was in disarray and only 9 minutes later, Zagreb added a second as van Heerden won the ball at the edge of the Rio box and spotted Lee's run into the box. A delicate chip found Lee, who finished with aplomb for his first goal of the season in as many starts.

5 minutes before half-time, David Bentley surged into the Rio box, but Rio's Romanian striker Mikos Belenyesi followed him in, fighting for the ball. Bentley made it all the way to the touchline, where he cut the ball back to a lurking Huo Zhiyu. Huo nutmegged Akira Fukushima, then made no mistake from 5 metres out for his second goal and Zagreb's third.

The second half started more or less the same as the first, with Zagreb keeping the tempo steady. Rio's frontman Letaj Sucodru made a rare foray into the Zagreb half, as the rest of the team came forward hoping to lessen the deficit. However, Marek Kotas stood his ground and made an excellent tackle on Sucodru. He cleared the ball as far as Bentley, who had stayed up front. Bentley chipped the ball over an onrushing Bruno Mendes and sidestepped him to collect the ball perfectly. His pace took him past Rio custodian Adriano Moreira before slotting home the ball at close range.

After the fourth goal, Zagreb visibly went down a gear, their job more or less done, and Socudru took the opportunity to score a consolation from a Belenyesi freekick. Though the ball looked to have been amply covered by Zagreb goalkeeper Marcel Need, it took a deflection off Kjell- Frode Bogersen and Need fumbled it over the line.

Zagreb held on till the end for the win, as Mark Picking and Elrio van Heerden missed late chances to increase their arrears. Zagreb will face First Division high-flyers and current leader Tromsø in the third round of the cup at Maksimir next week.

Dinamo Zagreb 1 - 0 FK Vardar

Late Winklhofer goal settles things

Zagreb, Croatia
Division 3C - FK Vardar looked to be heading for an undeserved draw early yesterday afternoon before a fabulous strike from Thomas Winklhofer turned the tie in the home side's favour.

Maksimir saw a capacity crowd of 45000 fans cheering the teams on as Vardar visited a resurgent Zagreb side, who were looking to extend their winning run to three games on the trot. It was tipped to be a tight contest, and on paper, it looked just that, with both sides failing to really trouble their opposition.

However, after the break, the Zagreb players started to control the match, making marauding runs into Vardar's box and causing no end of trouble for the defenders. Poor finishing and some last gasp defending though made sure that the score was kept level until the 80th minute.

Winklhofer, recently recalled to the squad after manager Jatex Cole decided to rest Inaki, played a sweet one-two with captain Ivo Rados, rouding defender Slavco Damjanovski and leaving him in his wake as he curled a wicked spinning ball into the far corner of the net. As Iven Austbø dived desperately short, the home crowd rose as one.

After the goal, the home side's nerves seemed to have been calmed and the score could have been put further beyond doubt as Juan Manuel Gutiérrez de Cos and Rados went close.

After the match, a beaming but visibly tired Zagreb manager told the assembled press he was relieved with the final score, but the players had to strive to improve even more if they were to last the pace.

"Of course the win streak is a good start, but we have to keep the momentum going.and not wear out like we have been liable to do over the apst few seasons."

Vardar manager Roy Larsen was not available for comment.

Dinamo Zagreb 3 - 0 A.S Jeunesse Esch

Rados stars as Dinamo register opening-day win

Division 3C - Dinamo Zagreb breezed past newly promoted side A.S Jeunesse Esch 2-0 yesterday, strolling to a comfortable win at Maksimir.

A 36 min Olexandr Buryi goal and a Luis Gonzalez header 6 minutes from regulation were enough to see off a weakened but resilient Jeunesse side. Young winger Ivo Rados once again served up a reminder of why he is so highly regarded, with a splendid display orchestrating the Zagreb attack all afternoon. Although he did not score, Man of the Match Rados notched an assist in the opening goal and was involved heavily in the other.

Dinamo Zagreb fielded 4 new signings, with Arne Repvik and Igor Morozov in defence and Buryi and Gonzalez in the middle of the park. Buryi was forunate as Rados' dangerous cross from the right was deflected off a defender and into his path, but he made no mistake with a rising drive into the opposition net and past stranded Jeunesse goalkeeper Yves Bernard, who had come off his line in an attempt to clear the ball.

A.S Jeunesse Esch were missing star winger Constant Kaïper, but it was just not their day as they struggled to find any sort of form in this match. Jeunesse defender Tor Erling Feen Larsen was having a torrid time containing Zagreb's relentless attacks, and brought down an onrushing Ivo Rados just outside the box in the 83rd min. That earned him a yellow card as Rados took the free kick. The delivery was exquisite and the set-piece perfect as Ruslan Kostishin at the near post drew two defenders with a dummy header and Inaki was on hand to head the ball down to an unmarked Gonzalez. The latter's glancing header gave Bernard no chance, leaving him with nothing to do but pick the ball out of the net.

Jeunesse manager Gijs Simons was gracious in defeat, pointing out that he had not expected much out of this match, and stating that Zagreb were the better team that day.

Dinamo's Jatex Cole told assembled journalists at the post-match conference that he was satisfied with the performance, but thought there was still room for improvement with a few of the players still shaking off the lethargy from the off-season.

"Hopefully, we'll get better as we go," he commented, "It's lucky for us that the first match was a fairly routine one, but I told the players we should have put away more of our chances. Rados did more than was expected of him but some of the players were guilty of wasteful passing and finishing. We'll look to improve before the next match comes around."

Rados and Repvik were also included in the Team of the Round for the division.

Cole Lets Slip About Transfer Plans

Division 1 Defender Apparent Target

Dinamo Zagreb manager Jatex Cole unwittingly let slip about his transfer plans in the run-up to thie first league matches of the season. At an impromptu press conference held at their Hitrec - Kacijan football school training ground, where the players were going through their paces, Cole was commenting on the readiness of his squad.

"We are very strong in midfield this season, with Ivo Rados truly ready to lead the team. In attack, we are fairly competent too with Juan Manuel Gutiérrez de Cos having successfully made the transition to the first team. Defensively however we are a bit weak. But I'm looking to change this in the near future. In fact today, I have verbally agreed on a deal with... erm well I wasn't supposed to reveal that..."

Cole chuckled as the assembled journalists roared with laughter. "Well, since I have already let slip about that, I may as well tell you that he is a strong defender from the first division and we will be very lucky to have him. His club made a huge sacrifice in letting him come over here and we will be grateful to them."

The gaffer has already signed new players this season. Notable among them have been Olexandr Buryi from Montreal Impact, in a move taht saw Roy Keane going the other way in a loan deal and Arne Repvik from feeder club Brann.

"We have lost some vital experience at the back, having let club captain Damir [Milinovic], Thomas [Manfredini] and Salvattore [Lanna] move to Brann."

Cole rounded off the conference by stating that while Zagreb were in a rebuilding process once again, he was hopeful that the club could challenge for top spot and gain top spot, "The sad truth to Division 3C and what sets us apart from the other Div 3s is that there are only two sets of clubs here, those fighting for promotion and those fighting relegation. Of course, we certainly hope to be among the former. It'll be tough but we have belief in ourselves."

Zagreb Outloans Completed For Now

Dinamo Zagreb today announced that 4 of its players had gone on loan at three different clubs. Manager Cole mentioned that no other player would be allowed to leave on loan until perhaps later in the season.

"We've reached our maximum number of outloans already and besides our squad is looking quite thin by our usual standards. I had trouble finding 11 names to put on our teamsheet for today's home friendly."

Zagreb is to play today against Norweigian side Brann, in it's annual two-legged tourney. Last season, Zagreb reserves totally whitewashed their opponents and won the inaugral Challenge Trophy. However, today's match pits Cole against two of his youngsters on loan at Brann, Finnish striker Joonas Siikala, who had found it hard breaking into the first team at Zagreb, and 19 year old Brazillian centreback Fabricio Frohlich, who looks to have a promising future ahead of him.

Earlier, young hotshot winger Josko Kurtovic completed his loan move over to division rivals Paris St Germain. Kurtovic has long been seen as one of Zagreb's hottest properties, though he has yet to break into the first team. Last season saw some outstanding displays from the Croatian wunderkid at Brann but it looks like he'll have to gain more experience before challenging for a first team place at Zagreb.

Defender Roy Keane also completed his one month loan move to Montreal Impact today, in view of securing a permanent deal. It looks like Keane's days at Zagreb are numbered after a row with manager Cole about his playing opportunities. Keane was reportedly said to be furious at the fact that Cole was still looking for one or two more quality defenders. When asked, Manager Cole responded sombrely, "We had a few words today yeah. Besides, I had enough of his whining too about wanting to go over to America... Seems Zagreb's not warm enough for him at the moment (it's 1°C and his balls are freezing) so the players got together and pooled money for him to take the early flight out. Now, we can finally have peace and quiet and take the earplugs out before training."
